Trend Spotlight: Y2K

For those who haven’t noticed, Y2K fashion is back with a vengeance. After years of minimalist dressing and pared-down styling trends, today’s looks are all about making a statement -- meaning they’re bigger and bolder than ever.

If we’re being technical here, Y2K started before the year 2000. This includes the late ‘90s and ending in the early-to-mid aughts.

Think the golden days of pop icons like our queen Britney Spears, power-belter Christina Aguilera, and Destiny’s Child. Of course, we can’t forget memorable outfits (and lines) from the OG influencers Paris Hilton and Nicole Richie.

Style Trends

Y2K fashion was defined by hot pink, loud, kitschy prints, and for some reason, velour.

Denim-on-denim

Denim ruled the 2000s and was deemed fancy enough to be worthy of the red carpet. Who could forget the iconic denim-on-denim look for the era’s biggest couple, Justin and Britney?

Bedazzled

Every teen had a Bedazzler, and trust us, they used it on everything. From denim jackets to trucker hats (another major staple of the 2000s), towels to t-shirts, nothing was safe from those sparkly jewels.

Small bags

No Y2K girl would be caught dead without a small, baguette bag. Bonus points if it was a white Louis Vuitton with multi-colored logos emblazoned on it. You know which one we’re talking about.

Loud prints

Probably one of the biggest trends to hit the 2000s was the use of loud, borderline kitschy, prints on absolutely everything. Hats, dresses, couches, rugs, you name it. There are a number of iconic prints from this decade - the checkerboard, cow print, and cheetah were the most popular.

In luxury fashion

Because the Gen Z crowd have deemed it cool once again, fashion houses have worked around the clock to give us a high fashion take on Y2K.

Celine’s model sported mesh trucker hats during its SS21 show.

Blumarine gave a major throwback to the ‘00s with its chunky belt, mini skirt, and knee boots combo.

Tory Burch came out with a collection of check outfits in her latest release.

In Street Style

Y2K clothing is EVERYWHERE. Shops like Zara, H&M, Urban Outfitter, and Topshop have all filled their racks with knitted cardigans, fluffy bucket hats, bedazzled statement tees, and prints of every design.

On Celebs Today

Gen Z celebrities, influencers, and TikTokers were quick to embrace (and even launch) the Y2K trend.

Singer and makeup mogul Rihanna has been seen on many occasions with various mesh trucker hats on.

TikTok babe Shy Smith has been seen rocking Juicy Couture sweatsuits on many occasions on her vids.

Pop sensation Dua Lipa posted a to-die-for ‘fit on the ‘gram featuring a body-hugging dress with a kitschy heart pattern which reminds us so much of the Powerpuff Girls’ logo.

Saweetie looking bomb as always in a fully bedazzled dress.

Bella Hadid is a firm believer in the Y2K trend. Here she is wearing four of them at once - a chunky metallic belt, bandana, long shades, and flatforms.

Singer-songwriter Olivia Rodrigo loves the Y2K trend so much, she even threw a 2000s-themed prom for her fans!

Y2K Glow Up by Blackbough

Of course, we just had to show our love for the beloved 2000’s trend. We didn’t want to go the kitschy route and give you basic cloud prints, ying yang symbols, and butterflies. We knew we had to level it up! So we got busy designing and came up with three fresh Y2K-inspired patterns for our new Cyber Love drop which we’re sure you’ll go crazy over.

Sage Trip

The checkerboard is one of this season’s hottest prints so we knew we had to put our own Blackbough spin on it. The Sage Trip features a light green on dark green check pattern, similar to a race flag. Perfect for those looking for another green ‘kini!

Cosmo Crush

For those who want something sweeter, the Cosmo Crush is just for you! Designed with fun, bright colors that come together in swirls, this print reminds us of fruity sorbets at the beach.

Darling Disco

You guys have been asking for more pastel designs so that’s exactly what you’re getting! While more muted in color, the Darling Disco is definitely a head-turner. It’s got a lilac and cream graphic print that is sexy in a sophisticated way.

Cyber Love is just the beginning of our nod to the ‘00s! Make sure you follow us on our socials so you don’t miss our next drops.
